The works were undertaken on a live hospital site, creating logistical challenges to deliver the works in line with the programme whilst also minimising the disruption to patients.

This was compounded by the nature of the care provided on site, which meant additional controls on movements around the site and what equipment was being used.

To address these challenges, we developed a bespoke construction phase plan and traffic management plan, as well as a bespoke site induction and sign-in process. These were developed in close collaboration with the client’s security team, who provided escorts for all personnel on site, as well undertaking a counting-in and out process for tools and equipment to ensure none were left on site when work was not being undertaken.

We also agreed a process for stopping work at short notice to allow site staff to deal with patient incidents within the unit, with operatives taking instructions from the security team.

To help minimise disruption to patients, key elements of work that could create the most disruption, such as groundworks, steel erection, and M&E works within the live areas of the facility were planned, scheduled, and co-ordinated in close collaboration with the unit staff.

Through the successful implementation of these measures, we were able to successfully deliver the project without incident and with minimal disruption to patients. This allowed us to hand over the project free of defects, on time, and on budget.
